August Gardening Top Tips

August is a great time for gardens with ripening crops and colourful flowers blooming.

Here are a few tips for looking after your garden this August:

Cutting & Pruning

Garden hedges may now look overgrown and untidy, August is the perfect month to give them a final trim before they stop growing. Birds may have made nests in your garden shrubbery and hedges so it is best to wait until the end of August when they should have left their nests. Take a look at your garden plants and make sure to deadhead them to maintain a continual bloom.

Holiday Hydration

With the summer holidays from school it is a busy time for families and going on holiday can mean we often neglect our gardens. Think about the sunlight in the garden, move pots into the more shaded areas if possible to stop them drying out. Water trays placed under the pots are a great way to keep the pots hydrated over a long period of time. Ask a neighbour or friend to water your garden plants once every few days.

Keep on Weeding

You may have noticed lots of weeds in the garden. Keep removing them consistently before it turns into a major weed removal task.

Organise your shed / outdoor storage

Take the time to organise your garden space and have a good clear out. If it is a cooler or even a sunny day why not declutter and organise outdoor storage. Give your summer house or shed a good clean if needed. Donate unwanted items to charity and create more space ready to store any garden decorations or bbq inside.
